On 11 December, we held our first IANética MEETING.
It was one of the panel discussions we had planned, and in it we addressed the theme of «Technohumanism vs Transhumanism», with a series of questions about how Technology is transforming us and whether the enhancement of our abilities will turn us into a new Homo, yet to be defined.
“Technohumanism accepts that Homo sapiens as we know it has completed its historical course and is no longer relevant in the future.” Harari warns that the only way to withstand the onslaught of intelligent machines will be “by using technology to create Homo deus: a far superior human model, which retains essential human characteristics but also enjoys enhanced physical and mental capabilities.”
This vision of Harari’s is closer to Transhumanism, whose aim is to transform the human condition through the development and manufacture of technologies that improve human capabilities at the physical, psychological and intellectual levels. Technohumanism, unlike Transhumanism, does not necessarily seek the evolution toward the Augmented Human, nor does it aim to halt a possible Cyborgization; it defines itself only as a movement that conceives human values in an integrated way, in the context of a Second Renaissance, where an anthropocentric vision puts Technology at the service of the Human Being.
This approach is to be achieved through the development of a normative ethics in the technological sphere, in order to hybridize with the new Humanism of the Digital Age. This union between thought and technology, arising from the application of the ideas and theses of the human disciplines to the disruptive emerging technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is the main basis of the movement and the means by which it achieves its maxim of attaining Technological Anthropocentrism, or TechnoAnthropoCentrism.
