NEXUM

NEXUM is the distillation of Cognitive Transition, not its summary: a summary shortens a text while keeping its form; distillation puts it under pressure until only what cannot be reduced any further is left. What took a whole chapter to argue there fits here in one edged line. One hundred sentences on judgment, the machine, delegation and sovereignty: the carry-on luggage of an age that does not let you check anything in.

It is a book you keep company with: you open it anywhere, read one entry, close it. You come back. The sentence that says nothing to you today will say everything six months from now.

A design object: a dark edition, its own visual pieces and an app for iOS and Android that presents you with one aphorism a day.

Why it exists

For the moment when a chapter won’t fit

The door of the meeting room. The elevator going up. The thirty seconds before you sign. The screen waiting for your decision with the cursor blinking. There you cannot reread a four-thousand-word argument: you can remember seven. NEXUM exists for that moment.

The argument stays in Cognitive Transition, intact, waiting for whoever needs it whole. Here is what survives the still. Whoever reads NEXUM without the other book will feel the riddle and be able to live on it; whoever reads it afterward will feel recognition, and each sentence will open an entire chapter in memory. Both paths are valid: one is a door; the other, a key.

How it is made

Three heights, one truth

Every entry has three heights, and the highest is not in this book: all of Cognitive Transition is the commentary on these hundred entries.

Height 1 · the temple

The sutra

The encoded sentence. Brief to the point of discomfort, not always understood at first reading, and that is deliberate: it declares and leaves a debt. It is made to be memorized and to come back to you alone in the elevator.

Height 2 · the public square

The aphorism

The same truth, unfolded. Where the sutra is silent, the aphorism shows the spring. It is the only form that works on its own in open country: it is quoted in a meeting, jotted in the margin of a contract.

Height 3 · reflection

The gloss

The mechanism, in about two hundred words: why the sentence is true, where you see it at work and what to do with it on a Tuesday morning.

Seven territories and a coda

From what you feel to the design that protects you

The order has a logic, but it is a logic offered, not imposed: the book opens wherever it falls.

01

The rupture

The mismatch you feel.

02

The machine

What is on the other side of the screen.

03

Judgment

The scarce asset, and how it is trained.

04

Delegation

What is handed over, to whom and within what limits.

05

The board

The terrain where the game is played.

06

The craft

What makes you hard to replace.

07

Sovereignty

The design that protects you.

Coda

The name of the terrain

The three letters that organize everything, said out loud.

The name

Nexum: the contract that bound, in reverse

In Rome there was a contract sealed with bronze and scales, the nexum: a free man handed over his own person as a pledge for a debt. He remained a citizen, but his time, his hands and his days belonged to the creditor. The word comes from nectere: to bind. The same verb that gave us nexus, connection, bond.

Today we hand over as a pledge the only things we brought at birth, time, attention and bonds, to pay a debt nobody remembers signing. Here the term returns inverted: the only nexum a free professional should sign is the bond with their own judgment. That nexum enslaved through debt; this one frees by choice.

Beyond the book

The NEXUM app, for iOS and Android

NEXUM will have its own app. Every day it will present you with an aphorism from the book in motivational mode, so that the right sentence finds you at the hour that suits you, without your having to open the book. One entry at a time, every day.

It is in preparation. The date and the download links will appear here when they are available.

Fourth book · 2027

45 Anni cum Machina

A BioPro by Pedro Mujica

His professional career told through the machines he has lived and worked with: forty-five years with the machine, from his first ZX Spectrum, in 1982, to 2027. The title is Latin; “45 years with the machine” is only its translation.

Book in preparation. Its own site will open with publication.
